Jamestown archaeologists have identified four sets of remains excavated from the site of the historic settlement’s church in 2013 as the colony’s first Anglican preacher, prominent early leader Gabriel Archer and two high-status relatives of Gov. Lord De La Ware. The milestone IDs confirm and underscore the importance of the church discovered in 2010 and — with the discovery of a Catholic reliquary in Archer’s grave — raise provocative questions about the strong presence of the outlawed faith in Protestant Jamestown.
